The Air We Share

The air you breathe out, I might inhale. Am I part of you now? And are you part of me? What do we set in motion with our shared breath?

Prior to Liberation Day (5th of May in the Netherlands) I collected the microscopic life in the air at seven locations in Amsterdam: NDSM, Javaplein, Museumplein, Haarlemmerplein, Plein ’40-’45, Het Homomonument, and Anton de Komplein.

I asked passers-by to breathe into a Petri dish. After seven days the invisible, microscopic worlds from the breath of these Amsterdammers became visible. For the Amsterdam Liberation Festival I made seven statues, one for each square.

In addition, I asked the participants: ‘‘What do you set in motion with your breath? And what would you like to set in motion in the world?’’
