Tears, earth and chrysanthemum

An olfactory installation by Brazilian artist Karola Braga, presented at the 13th Bienal do Mercosul in 2022. The work features a white bed sheet imbued with the scent of mourning, suspended on a clothesline facing the Guaíba River. As the wind moves the sheet, a delicate fragrance permeates the space, evoking themes of loss and remembrance. The bed sheet symbolizes a place of intimacy and vulnerability, reflecting on personal and collective grief experienced during the pandemic. This piece was a finalist for the Sadakichi Award for Experimental Work with Scent at the 9th Art and Olfaction Awards.
