Stringer’s Ridge

Stringer’s Ridge is an immersive installation by Andrew O’Brien that delves into the complexities of perceiving dense, horizonless landscapes, specifically focusing on the honeysuckle-overrun forests of Stringer’s Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Utilizing the traditional technique of enfleurage, O’Brien captures the scent of invasive honeysuckle species, intertwining olfactory elements with synthetic tree trunks and photographic works. The photographs, overlaid with surveying marks, challenge conventional representations of nature, prompting viewers to consider the limitations of replication and the impact of human intervention on natural environments. This exhibition invites reflection on the interplay between sensory experience, ecological disruption, and the methodologies we employ to understand and document the natural world.
