Scents and Sonics of The Ocean

Scents and Sonics of The Ocean is a multisensory installation that explores the intersection of science, scent, and sound to evoke the ecological and cultural memory of Sapelo Island, Georgia. Perfumer Yosh Han crafted three custom scent accords—COAST, MARSH, and FOREST—capturing the island’s diverse environments. These scents were analyzed using spectroscopic techniques, and their molecular data were transformed into immersive soundscapes by sound artist Malte Leander, in collaboration with marine scientist Julia Kubanek. The project, part of the Ocean Memory Project, invites audiences to engage with the sensory dimensions of environmental change and cultural heritage.
