This multisensory exhibition by Brooklyn-based perfumer and multimedia artist Irina Adam centers on aromatic plant extracts created as mementos of a secluded coastal area in the Long Island Pine Barrens. The exhibition features scents accompanied by photographs capturing the abstract beauty of the forest. In 2022, the pitch pines dominating the forest began to be decimated by the Southern Pine Beetle, a phenomenon linked to rising temperatures. Adam preserved the forest’s scentscape by infusing pine pollen, resin, needles, and neighboring fragrant tree flowers into her latest perfume, “Pitch Pine Pollen.” The work invites viewers to witness the swift, irreversible loss due to global warming while engaging with the surprising beauty of change and resilience.
