Beneath the Earth, the Sky is a solo exhibition by artist Carrie Paterson, presented at the Institute for Art and Olfaction from April 26 to May 26, 2024. The exhibition utilizes mixed media works and miniature landscapes that incorporate flora and images from a 2024 Chinese calendar to model non-linear dynamical systems. Paterson’s art-technology practice explores themes of memory, displacement, sensory experience, and diaspora. Her works feature olfactory components, such as the “Homesickness Kit for spacefarers” and “Chemisphere,” which use scent to evoke connections to Earth and the cosmos. The exhibition reflects on the human-earth/nature “metabolic rift” and emphasizes the importance of ecological awareness and care.
