Animating the Mountain is a community-led art initiative from the Waking.Land project that blends ritual, animation, and collective creativity to engage with upland landscapes in County Leitrim. Participants collaboratively “animate” the mountain—through drawn, performative, and projected imagery—re-inscribing the land with cultural memory and local ecological knowledge. This act of place-making foregrounds embodied relationships with land, challenging passive consumption of natural spaces. By embedding animation into environmental care, the project cultivates active stewardship of upland ecosystems and resilience in the face of climate change pressures. Through sight and communal enactment, Animating the Mountain revitalizes landscape connection and climate-conscious land practice.
