Anaerobe is a sensory artwork that fuses paleontology, botany, and perfumery to explore the hidden ecologies and histories preserved within Ireland’s boglands. Created by perfumer Julie Barretta for the Bogskin exhibition, the piece reconstructs the scent of a bog through notes of soil, ink, humus, papyrus, and decay, evoking the anaerobic, oxygen-poor environment that has preserved both plant matter and ancient artifacts such as the Faddan More Psalter, a manuscript unearthed after 1,300 years underground.
