Aerosculpture – Sea of Fragrant Cloud

Aerosculpture is an olfactory installation by Maki Ueda, premiered during the Kyoto Arashiyama Art Festival in November 2022. The work explores the visualization of scents and the invisible movement of airborne particles, inspired by the heightened awareness of air transmission during the pandemic. Utilizing dry ice and smoke, Ueda creates a “sea of fragrant cloud,” making the intangible aspects of scent and air movement perceptible. The installation draws from traditional Japanese incense culture, where smoke is used for purification and spiritual practices. Accompanied by experimental music from Friedrich Glorian, Aerosculpture invites visitors to engage with the ephemeral nature of scent, prompting reflection on the unseen elements of our environment and the importance of sensory perception in understanding ecological and health-related phenomena.
