A New Middle of Nowhere is a conceptual performance and sculptural installation by Dani Ploeger. The artist determined the geographical centre of Białowieża Forest biosphere reserve, then created a brass-plated bison-dropping replica containing a GPS transmitter broadcasting those coordinates. Wherever the object was carried, nearby GPS-enabled devices would falsely register themselves at that centre, redefining the audience’s perception of location and wilderness. The project poetically inundates the notion of “real remoteness” with digital interference, asking whether solitude or distance can persist in a world mapped, geo-tagged, and constantly mediated.
